Unable to kill Dearmid by force, cunning, or magic, Finn agrees to make peace with him (11).
Dearmid and Grania escape once more, and Finn sends his Druid foster-mother to attack Dearmid, who kills her. Grania begs Dearmid for some of the magic quicken berries the giant guards, and Dearmid kills him, leaving the forest unprotected from the Fianna. They flee the pursuing Fianna with the help of Dearmid's Danann foster-father Angus Og and find refuge in a forest guarded by a giant. She and Dearmid O'Dyna fall in love and she lays a geise on him to elope with her.

Finn's two sons Innsa and Ficla are killed in turn holding the ford against a series of Lochlan chieftains, followed by Dearmid and Fotla, until the spilled blood of the magicians and the sunrise frees the Fianna to defeat Midac and Sinsar the Lochlan king (10).įinn decides to take young Princess Grania as his third wife. Midac invites Finn and his companions to a feast in his Hostel of the Quicken Trees, where they are trapped by Lochlan magic. Finn captures and fosters Midac, son of a Lochlan king. Nine of the Fianna, including Finn's young grandson Osca, retrieve them along with a stallion and a mare, from whom are bred the first war horses of the Fianna (9). One of the Fianna, Arthur the son of the King of Britain, steals Bran and Skolawn and carries them off to Britain. They ask the new King and his chieftains to ride the mare back in payment, which they do before disappearing (8). Finn and his companions sail after them to an island where first Dearmid O'Dyna and then the whole crew enter Tir-fa-Thonn, the Land Under the Sea, where the Prince, who was the Giolla Dacker, asks their help in claiming his inheritance from his elder brother. The Fianna dig into their Fairy mound, where Ainé gives Finn an antidote, but not wishing to marry her, he declines to turn his hair back from silver to blond (7).Īn incredibly ugly man, the Giolla Dacker or Hard Ghilli, and his incredibly ugly mare, take service with Finn, shortly before running away over the sea with fifteen of the Fianna on her back. Two Fairy sisters, Ainé and Milucra, are ambitious to marry Finn, but Milucra transforms Finn into an old man to spite Ainé. After seven years of searching for her, Finn finds a strange boy in the Wild who proves to be his son by Saba, Oisin, but Saba and the Druid are never seen again (6). While Finn is away fighting Lochlan raiders, the Druid changes her to a deer again and she vanishes. The Lochlan men attempt to feed Finn to Skolawn, the fearsome Grey Dog and brother of Bran whom they stole from the Young Hero, but Finn tames him with Bran's golden leash and the Fianna lay waste to Lochlan (5).īran and Skolawn take pity on a doe who transforms into a Fairy maiden named Saba, cursed by a jealous Druid, who marries Finn.
The Prince of Lochlan, land of the Vikings, swears his service to Finn for a year if Finn will come to the royal palace of Lochlan at the end of it. Finn keeps his brindled hound, whom he names Bran (4). With the help of a crew of gifted men, Finn tracks the giant to his tower, steals back the three children as well as the giant's dogs, and slays the giant. Finn receives the fortress of Almu and takes into the Fianna many great warriors, including Goll Mac Morna and Finn's son Oisin and grandson Osca, who can pass fantastic tests of skill and learning (3).įinn is laid under a geise by the Young Hero to help him save his newborn child from a giant who has stolen his first two babies. Each Samhein for twenty years, Tara has been burnt down by a Fairy called Aillen of the Flaming Breath, whom Finn slays with a magic spear in exchange for the captainship of the Fianna (2).
Finn goes to Tara at Samhein to swear his service to Cormac, the High King. He grows up a great warrior and returns the Treasure Bag of the Fianna to the hidden remnant of his clan, but before he takes up their leadership, goes to study under a Druid and accidentally acquires knowledge and the power of healing by sucking the juice of the Salmon of Wisdom from his burnt thumb (1). Finn Mac Cool, greatest captain of the Fianna brotherhood of the High King of Erin, is born and raised in secret in the forest after his father is killed by Goll Mac Morna in a battle between Clan Bascna and Clan Morna over the captainship of the Fianna.
